Can Clean Athletes Still Compete?

Hardly a single day passes without another athlete being caught doping somewhere. You need only remember athletes like Marion Jones or Floyd Landis to know the advantage it can give. It begs the question of whether or not an athlete who refuses to cheat stands a chance of being successful.

The answer to that question depends very much on the sport. The greater the reliance on physical attributes, the less likely it is for a natural athlete to compete on a level similar to those who are doping. And athletes are aware of that fact, that’s why weightlifting has the highest number of failed tests of any Olympic sport. A lifter would need to have freakish genetics to achieve the same muscle mass as someone using anabolic steroids or a testosterone booster. Similarly, clean cyclists and sprinters are going to find themselves hard-pressed to match the feats of doping peers.

In contrast, the greater influence skill has on performance, the less incentive there is to risk cheating. Tennis and soccer are extremely physically intensive, but drugs are going to be of limited benefit. No matter what drugs are taken, an athlete with a bad forehand will still have a bad forehand. Similarly, a midfielder won’t suddenly be able to make world class passes because he has improved his physical attributes. Of course, lets not be naive, that doesn’t mean no one cheats in these sports, it just means you can still be the best without having to resort to cheating.
